Why can’t we as a species get passed this phase?

There’s nothing that drives me more insane than seeing a bunch of my Facebook friends mass sharing/messages things like “copy and paste this so Facebook knows you own your own data…”, and the recent nonsense regarding friend requests that spread via messenger, ”Hi….I actually got another friend request from you yesterday…which I ignored so you may want to check your account. Hold your finger on the message until the forward button appears…then hit forward and all the people you want to forward too….I had to do the people individually. Good Luck!”

Not to mention all the fake profile that are created between Facebook and Instagram daily. The reason they’re so easy to catch (aside from the fact they add your actual friends), is that Facebook has already identified you in all of your pictures. That sweet “tag photo” option helps Facebook identify you in all of your friends photos and vice versa. By “stealing” your public pictures and creating a new account scammers/spammers are actually bound to be caught 100/100 times, especially when they use someone who’s somewhat famous. If there was really a fake profile of you, simply report it to Facebook, plain and simple.

It honestly blows my mind that people buy into this! We had the same thing with email chains back in the late 90’s and up until the big social media bang of the last decade or so. Ridiculous emails like, “if you don’t forward this, God will not allow you into heaven”, and people really think if they don’t that their religious overlord will spite them the rest of their existence. It was annoying and they knew it, the recipient knew it, the entire world knew it, but they still did it anyways!

I’m no psychology or sociology expert, I only ever had to take 1 or 2 classes of each in college and forgot pretty much all of it, however, I am sure one of my friends in the fields could easily identify why this persists for literally generations.

Additionally, the fact that people got outraged by the Cambridge Analytica debacle yet still continue to connect or grant access to apps/quizzes and more to their account literally feels like insanity. The immediate complacency, forgiveness, and apparent trust that everything somehow has changed baffles me. People continue to share quizzes asking what color their soul is, or what Marvel character they are in another life. To top it off, they get upset when you highlight the fact they are voluntarily giving up access to their accounts when they believe they were “hacked”.

I simply don’t get it, however, I am hoping that the next generation sees the ridiculousness of all of this, the same as our generation sees the ridiculousness in 90% of the spam paper mail we get nowadays. It’s also about time for a new social platform. I think the next platform can take all the lessons taught from MySpace to Google+ and make something that everyone likes without the fear of being sold as a product 24/7.
